X-Walks and the confusion

Calgary has introduced these interesting new crosswalks. They are stated to be all go/all stop. Only when all cars have red lights are pedestrians allowed to cross. Cars aren’t “supposed” to turn right on red lights to speed up traffic flow when the other light is green and to increase safety for pedestrians. When the walk signal comes up, it’s a free for all for the walkers. You can even go kitty-corner.

In theory this should be perfect but everyday I go through them there are at least a couple pedestrians jumping the gun when one of the lights turn to red. This leads to cars being frustrated at the walkers. There are cars going ahead turning right on the red light. Is it just something that takes time?

I’ve heard rumors that this idea came from New York. Not sure how true that is but you’d think they would have traffic figured out. Honestly, I don’t think people are smart enough to ever really get this idea. A very big generalization but I think it’s true.

Yes, the idea came from New York and Tokyo where these types of crosswalks have been in place for years.

Hopefully it’s just a matter of time before Calgarians get the hang of it. Hopefully 😉
